What to ignore as a new real estate agent.
Hi sweet friend,
I was thinking about “noise” this evening. Why does it exist in this world? How do we ignore it or drown it out? Is there such a thing as good noise? Can we learn from noise? What can we learn from noise? Should I pay attention to noise? Should I make noise?
Noise is everything around us that we shouldn’t be paying attention to. If everything around us except one thing is noise, how do we decide what to focus on without obsessing or wasting time?
Good people make noise, and bad people make noise. Noise to one might not be noise to another.
Noise is around you, so, therefore, you should listen to what is within you.
What is your gut telling you?
Where do you feel the pull?
I don’t know how to direct these random thoughts in the right direction, but I wanted to share them with you because they came to mind as the preface for this blog post.
Noise is everywhere. The noise I am now referencing is terrible advice. It breaks my heart to see so much bad advice right now. So today, my goal is to dig deep to give you the advice I wish someone would have given me 8 years ago, thanks to what I know now.
Do not do “everything”. You need to decide what you want to be known for, and you start with what you love to do. — I love to help people. I love to give. I love to retain and provide information. I like to guide people. I want to be needed. What this has developed into is being known as the relocation relator who answers the question of where to live in the Houston suburbs.
Do not spend money on print advertising, such as grocery carts, billboards, check-out separators, golf course guides, maps, or bench ads. — I have done them all except a bench ad, and let me tell you, I have never made a single dollar doing so. I know this works for some, but it is just one of their efforts, and you aren’t seeing everything they do. If you decide to farm a particular neighborhood that another agent doesn’t already dominate, this can be part of your farming method, but it needs to be calculated.
Happy hours with other real estate agents. — Happy hours aren’t the best way to spend your time. Instead, you should start a networking group with other like-minded individuals. Meetup.com and Facebook are great places to start a group.
All social media platforms. — You need to focus on making content for one. You can cross-syndicate to the other platforms using Loomly, but you want to perfect the one platform that has the potential to reach your dream clients at volume. Creating searchable and evergreen content has been the key to my success over the last four years.
The best practices of realtors who aren’t ethical, transparent, or genuine. — They weren’t cool in high school, and no matter what car they drive or how many followers they have on TikTok, they aren’t cool now.
Monthly fee-based listing services that get your business on “1000s of sites.” — These used to be beneficial to your business or website SEO seven or so years ago, but because of overuse, Google doesn’t weigh these like they used to. Also, in this category of monthly fee-based providers, you should not pay a company to post generic content on your blog, Google Business Profile, Instagram, or Facebook. No one has ever hired someone based on generic content.
Anyone negative. — Negative people only do one thing. They suck the energy right out of you, they bring you down, and they prevent you from performing at your highest level. You need to have a positive attitude, perseverance, determination, and grit; that will get you halfway there. Most days, showing up, having a smile on your face, being honest with those around you, and trying your hardest will get you farther than most.
Real estate is a fascinating, exciting, and rewarding industry. It can be tricky, lonely, disappointing, and full of challenges, but you get the chance to help people and change lives. I love it.
If I were to give you some actionable yet straightforward advice, they would be…
Make content that can be found via Google and YouTube with words your dream client might use to get their questions answered and their curiosity served.
Be kind, patient, and helpful while doing more than other agents.
Explore and learn everything there is to know about your local market and neighborhoods. Bonus points if you document all this on your blog, YouTube, and social media platforms.
Ensure every content you publish has a purpose and call to action.
Do not spend any money on efforts you can’t measure.
Always be professional. Every time and everywhere.
Always be learning, don't give up, and let me know if there is anything I can do to help you accomplish your dreams.
I believe in you.
With love, Jo.
