Our new ploy to limit our kid’s screen time…
Hi friend,
I am new to writing for the public—well, I am not—but I am new to writing on Medium. I have stumbled upon some writers I love but haven’t studied the complete body of work of one person here.
And now, I am thinking, I probably should.
So I don’t know what I am about to say to be accurate, but I am assuming, it isn’t normal for people to talk about the large array of topics that I am writing on, so if you are here, and enjoying my left field, thank you.
While I don’t think I know everything, I am still confident in my ideas. That’s human, right?
I really need to credit my husband for this fantastic idea. It came after our 8-year-old son was upset about having to take a shower after soccer practice instead of being allowed to watch a show on his iPad. His behavior derived from being too tired to function, which I take responsibility for, and we weren’t trying to punish him but protect him.
When we got home, we asked him to shower, but we later found him still sweaty, asking for a popsicle (100% fruit). I told him yes, but then mentioned he could only have it after he showered. He copped an attitude, which led to him losing his iPad for the rest of the evening, and that is when it instantly became apparent that he had stayed up too late. It was only 7:29 PM.
My husband started the hot water for him and then returned to the kitchen, where I was eating a late dinner and deleted some junk emails. After summarizing the kids’ most recent behaviors around their electronics, he suggested the most brilliant idea.
The children can earn screen time in direct proportion to how long they practice their sport.
Scarlett is 13, and she plays tennis but is also in theater. Lincoln is 8, he is homeschooled, and he takes Ninja classes and plays soccer. Juliette is 10, and she takes plays soccer. She is also in choir and theater. They can practice their sport, ride their bike, play outside, exercise, take a walk, walk the dogs, or help a sibling practice their sport. I think we might also want to add reading a book to the list.
Tomorrow will be “day one.” I will report back in a couple of weeks.
Wish us luck.
With love,
Jo
