I love my dad.
My dad has been a constant role model in my life, for better or for worse. I witnessed his decisions and resemblances of mistakes. He taught me how to love, he taught me how to work hard, he taught me how to treat people right.
But he also made me cry.
As a child, he made me feel unimportant. He made me feel like I was not good enough. He made me feel inadequate.
He let me make my own decisions. He let life smack me in the face. He let me cry on his shoulder. He let me breathe. He let me roam.
As an adult, he made me feel used. He disappointed me more than any moment as a child.
But he made it up to me in the recent lessons he silently spoke to me.
My dad is not perfect.
But he is the perfect example of how you should live life: how you persevere, follow your dreams, never give up, and grow up by owning up to your mistakes.
He is the male lead in my reality of The Love Story. Because of him, I know that unconditionally loving one another means you never have to say, “I’m sorry.”
My dad built me.
I am who I am, and I made the decisions I have made because he was my father. I smile and carry on because he is my father.
He did his best. He loved his best. He tried his best.
And I am forever grateful for exactly how I was raised and exactly how I was treated.
I do not want my life to look any different than it does.
I am proud of the “mistakes” I have made.
I am proud of the direction I am going.
I am not my past, and my past does not own me.
I own it.
With love,
Jo
