What We Need To Do and What We Want To Do
Can these be combined? Should these be combined? And where is the line?
This is what I woke up thinking about this morning.
My day didn't go as planned yesterday once I left my writing table. It ended as planned, but the middle didn’t feel good. It was uncomfortable.
Uncomfortable conversations are a part of life, especially when trying to get what you want, and it includes others, as all good things do. The most uncomfortable part of the day wasn’t a conclusion. There was only truth.
I have been talking a lot about alignment lately. Here, in my mind to myself, and on the papers of my physical notebook.
Alignment is what is necessary to make things work.
Last night, I volunteered and ended up with four helpers I could delegate to do the task(s) that were predetermined to be just me. I was standing next to one of them, who happened to be a family therapist. She lives 45 minutes away and recently found the first activity in which her daughter has shown interest: musical theater. I tested my hypothesis against her thoughts with no preconceptions of my new thoughts.
I asked her, “If you could sum up children's needs into one word, what would it be?”
She replied, “Love.” But what she proceeded to describe was unconditional love.
I stand here evaluating and soaking in that thought. It didn’t impact me then as it is doing now.
Some days back, I did an exercise.
I wrote down all the words that describe me, all the words that describe what I exhibit, and everything I am good at or talented at.
One of those words was “unconditional love.”
So I haven’t told you what I want to do in life.
That revelation I wrote about some days back.
My true purpose is that “I want to help people live a life of happiness by aligning their brain and heart.”
To obtain this, you must have a healthy body, a healthy mind, awareness, and a plan.
Then there are things you must believe. On the original list, my soul wrote down the word “love,” which was quickly changed to “unconditional love.”
I told you my soul wrote this.
Like my unconscious mind.
If I had looked outside, I might have discovered time was frozen.
But I felt more than myself was present in figuring out exactly what I should be offering the world. More than myself was in control. It was the most surreal experience of my life.
As I reflect, I understand, it was my past and future self in control.
Not me in the now.
The past is the baby to which we owe everything, and the future is the greyhead to which we owe everything.
When we live our purpose, we create one of three—like a fire triangle. Fire triangles need fuel, heat, and an oxidizing agent, like oxygen. All three must exist.
Our dreams (the baby, who we came into this world being, the one so full of hopes and dreams) is the oxygen, the fuel (the current self, the only one thing that can give life to the other two), and the heat (the future self, the product, the reward).
Every word we hear and every moment we experience has a purpose in our life. They are all messages, and if we aren’t paying attention or listening, we will get off our path and miss out on the purpose of each interaction.
I asked a friend the other day, “How do you know all of this?”
And he said, “It is the hands I have shaken.”
I translate this into the rooms he has been within and the conversations he has had or overheard.
The premise of the problems in the world right now is all of the noise. Whether you blame toxic people, social media, or bad parenting — it is all noise.
The wrong kind of noise.
Noise comes in the form of things you shouldn’t be paying attention to: the things you shouldn’t let influence you.
How do we avoid that noise?
That is the question I will leave you with today. Let it sit with you. Let it stir you.
With love,
Jo
