Today.

Today is Father’s Day.

The idea of Father’s Day can be traced back to the early 1900s when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington was inspired by the Mother’s Day celebrations to have a day honoring fathers as well. Dodd’s own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone after his wife died during childbirth. Wanting to honor the sacrifices made by fathers like her own, Dodd organized the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910 in Spokane. Initially, the observance gained little traction outside of the local area.

Over the years, the idea of Father’s Day spread as different groups pushed for its official recognition. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge gave the first national endorsement of the day. It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national holiday. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in over 60 countries worldwide. It has become a day to honor fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influential role fathers play in society, even though it took several decades to gain widespread acceptance and status as an official national holiday in the United States after Mother’s Day.

I want to wish everyone who hates celebrating today a beautiful day for the opportunities each day brings.

Everything that happens in life happens for a reason. It is so frustrating and cliché, but it is true. It doesn’t mean you are less or undeserving. There is a lesson in the muck. Our job is to ensure we are learning the lesson and serving our purpose.

Steam past.
Grasp hope.
Live your purpose.
Honor those who failed before us.
Honor those who succeeded before us.
For it is only in that success that we exist.
We were created on purpose, for a purpose.
Live, live, live.
Live to give others a purpose.
Live to honor.

So, Happy Father’s Day to the ones who feel forgotten.
You have not been forgotten.
You are loved.
You have a mission.
Live it.
Breath it.
Be it.

With love,

Jo
